Patrick Utomi was born on February 6, 1956, in Kaduna, Nigeria. He is of Igbuzo descent in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. He attended various schools for his primary and secondary education, including St. Thomas, Kano, Our Lady of Fatima, Gusau, Christ the King College, Onitsha, and Loyola College, Ibadan. Patrick Utomi enrolled at the Federal School of Arts and Science before gaining admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1973, to study Mass Communication. He later received his Ph.D., MPA, and MA from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He has also been a scholar-in-residence at the Harvard Business School and the American University in Washington, D.C.
Career
Patrick Utomi’s career has been diverse and impressive. He is a professor at Lagos Business School, where he holds the Social and Political Economy Environment of Business and Entrepreneurship chair. He is also the founder of the Centre for Value in Leadership (CVL), a non-profit organization that focuses on leadership development, values-based education, and research into the socioeconomic issues facing Nigeria and Africa. In addition, he served as an adviser to the president of Nigeria and as Chief Operating Officer of Volkswagen Nigeria.
Politics
In politics, Patrick Utomi ran for the presidency of Nigeria in 2011 under the platform of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP) but lost to the incumbent president. He was later declared as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress for the 2019 general election in Delta State by a faction of the party. However, the national working Committee of the All Progressive Congress overturned the factional declaration and declared Chief Great Ogboru as its Delta state gubernatorial candidate for the 2019 general Elections.
