In December 2005, he assumed the position of Governor after Alamieyeseigha’s impeachment for money laundering.

Jonathan later became the Vice President of Nigeria under President Umaru Yar’Adua. During his time in office, he played a significant role in negotiating peace with militant groups in the Niger Delta, which led to the cessation of hostilities through the government’s amnesty program.

Following President Yar’Adua’s illness and subsequent death, Jonathan was sworn in as the Acting President of Nigeria in 2010. Later that year, he won the presidential election and was inaugurated as the 14th President of Nigeria.
